Metso to supply biomass boiler plant to Finland

 Metso are to supply Keuruun Lämpövoima Oy with a biomass boiler plant for combined heat and power production (CHP) in the town of Keuruu, Finland.The boiler plant will be delivered by the Metso-Wärtsilä joint venture MW Power Oy. Equipment related to environmental systems will be delivered by Metso’s Power business line. The total value of the investment is over EUR 10 million. The start-up of the plant is scheduled for the end of 2010. The order is included in Energy and Environmental Technology’s Q2 orders received.

The biomass boiler plant will utilize bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) technology and will use forest chips and milled peat as the main fuels. The plant will produce 15 MW of district heat for the Keuruu area and 5 MW of electricity for the national grid. With the new biomass plant, Keuruun Lämpövoima will be able to reduce the consumption of oil and increase the usage of biomass in heat and power generation.

Keuruun Lämpövoima Oy is a company owned by Keuruun Sähkö group and located in Central Finland. The main shareholders of the group are the city of Keuruu and Fortum Power and Heat Oy.

The Metso-Wärtsilä joint venture MW Power Oy provides medium- and small-scale power and heating plants. The company focuses on technologies for renewable fuels. Metso owns 60% and Wärtsilä 40% of the joint venture. The joint venture started its operations on January 1, 2009.
