MPM Engineering has the Kraft
MPM Engineering has installed a new State of the Art Scanning System at Kapstone Kraft Paper Corporation’s sawmill in South Carolina, USA for Log Breakdown. The sawmill already has a Bucking system from MPM that utilizes the high density 3D scanning data to grade the stem and cut logs out of it depending upon their grade and value. The system measures log characteristics such as diameter, taper, sweep, cat face, crook, flare and knots to determine the best log value that can be cut from each and every stem.
Due to the overwhelming success of this bucking system, the sawmill decided to upgrade their breakdown line with similar technology so that they could grade the logs automatically at the breakdown line instead of the operator having to visually determine each log’s grade.
The log grading system at the breakdown line re-identifies the log grade that was applied at bucking station and optimizes it using the matching grade of boards resulting in a higher value recovery for the sawmill.
MPM Engineering has been doing stem grading for years using surface knot information and is currently working on incorporating internal log characteristics such as knots, rot, sap wood and so on.
These characteristics cannot be identified using external 3D scanning data but instead, x-ray scanning information will be utilized to identify these characteristics.
MPM Engineering is consistently pushing the technology further to give our customers a competitive edge at all times. At MPM we believe that our customer’s success is our success.
