Direct support in control system sets new standard for forest machine service

Posted on July 22nd, 2010

Komatsu Forest has launched a remote support service for the control systems used in all Valmet forest machines. This sets a new standard for the level of service offered for forest machines, featuring secure direct access to the machine’s computer system with retained integrity. The system, called Fortrax, enables the operator to quickly get help directly in the computer, spanning everything from software updates to machine setting adjustments. All technical system components are based around mobile communication and will be available for all Valmet machines in Sweden, Finland, and Germany, as the cellular networks in these countries offer sufficient capacity and coverage.

The system comprises the electronics required for mobile communication and the software to remotely control the PC. The system also includes service content, which comprises a service agreement for access to support for the software installed on the PC.

In order to ensure high reliability in the delivery of the service, the electronics are integrated with the cab and the antenna is mounted on the roof so as to maximize communication performance.

The biggest advantage of Fortrax is the reduction in the downtime otherwise experienced while waiting for service measures involving the onboard computer, thereby saving money. What’s more, help with machine settings to ensure optimal machine and operator performance can be provided more quickly.
And not only can the computer be controlled remotely; technicians can make an inventory of system hardware and software, troubleshoot computer hardware, and even update software.

Control system training is also possible, since the operator can see exactly what the technician is doing with the control system. The technician can show how service measures are done and use the built-in chat function to communicate with the operator. With its built-in modem, Fortrax provides the option to use the Internet and e-mail in the cab.

The security aspects of remote control, such as in terms of integrity, have also been considered. In order for the technician to access the computer, the operator must provide confirmation each time a connection is made. The operator can also see exactly what the service provider is doing with the computer.
